Join Discover Dorset Tours for a fun and informative day out to see three of Britain’s greatest treasures.
We drive through Thomas Hardy’s Wessex via the Roman town of Dorchester as we head north leaving the patchwork fields of Dorset behind and on into the neighboring county of Wiltshire.
On our scenic route inland, we pass many round barrows, lasting evidence of the Neolithic people who once lived and died here. The bus climbs up onto Salisbury Plain, where pasture gives way to arable land dotted with small rural villages. Roman roads, set out to aid their conquest of this land after AD43, guide us to Stonehenge, a notable landmark and way point even then.
Arriving at Stonehenge (entrance fee included), your guide will issue you with multilingual audio guide and take you into the site from where you will be free to explore at your leisure.
A small shuttle bus or land train will take you to the stones from the visitor’s centre. The 4-5,000 year old structure represents man’s relationship with the Earth, Sun and Moon, in so many weird and wonderful ways. Set in the broader landscape still hinting of Neolithic England, Stonehenge is somewhere everyone must go to once in their life.
The excellent visitor centre at Stonehenge will give you further insight into the ancient monument with a fascinating exhibition of artifacts found in the local area. The centre also houses a souvenir shop and spacious cafe offering light refreshments.
Driving past Old Sarum, we drop down into the historic City of Salisbury. Your guide will accompany you into the cathedral (Entrance donation included) where you can admire a building that, when complete in 1220, was the tallest building in England at 125 meters to the tip of the spire
Within Salisbury Cathedral is the Chapter House, home to one of only four copies of the 1215 Magna Carta. There is a special exhibition relating to this document that sets out the basic principles that underpin English Law, and in turn the American Constitution.
